Hooray Hooray the First of May!

Barbara Musser, Sexy Saturdays, breast cancer, intimacy after breast cancer, breast cancer and sensuality, cancer and sex

I was 20 or 21, and home at my parent’s from college. It was May 1 and I was in the kitchen with mom, who was cooking something. The phone rang. I answered, “Hello?”
A deep male voice, ” Hooray, hooray, the first of May. Outdoor fu…g starts today.”
Me, sputtering, “Excuse me?”
Deep male voice, “Ruthie?”  that was my mother
Me, “No, this is Barbara.”
Deep male voice, incredulously, “Barbie??? Let me speak with your mother.”

Turns out that it was a neighbor from long ago who hadn’t seen me since age 5. He and his wife and my parents were pals and often got together on weekend evenings for drinks, dinner, cards, dancing and so on. He used to hold me in his arms and dance in the kitchen and I was enchanted.

When I was 5 my family moved away and I never saw those neighbors again…

Now all these years later I still remember that phone call when I was a young adult. The idea that my parents would engage in such raunchy (to me at that age) acts was a big shock to me. Now I chuckle at it.

And it brings up the idea of intimate play in nature. The first of May is the day of an ancient pagan ceremony to bless the fertility of the land to ensure a bountiful food crop. A young maiden and the god of the crops made love in the fields on this night, with the idea that the seeds of their lovemaking would help with the crops.

Whether you have a garden or not, I invite you to spend some time outdoors in the moonlight with your beloved if you have one, or alone if you are single. During this time, contemplate your juicy feminine self, feel your feet on the earth and let your vital life force energy flow through you. Imagine that it flows from you right into the earth. You can kiss, stroke your skin, howl at the moon, whatever inspires you ~ and make it a sacred act to bless the earth.

I will be on a weekend camping trip with friends at the Point Reyes National Seashore. Tonight we’ll sit around the campfire and I’ll create a group ritual for us to honor mother earth with our love and sacred intentions. What will you do? Please share with us so that we can all learn from each other. Happy Beltane!
